Technology in High Speed Trains

In just a few years High Speed has changed the habits and customs of millions of people, shortening distances and travelling times. The Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group has built over one thousand kilometres of High Speed/High Capacity lines, the most important infrastructural work in Italy since the end of the Second World War.

This result was achieved over time and by winning demanding challenges related mostly to the orographic and hydrological characteristics of the Italian territory and the high urbanisation of the areas concerned. The HS/HC system today represents Italian technological excellence.

The record reached by the FS Group in terms of high speed innovation is recognised all over Europe and the world, and the same can be said for the excellent results in the safety segment. On the new HS/HC lines, the Italian railway has adopted the European Railway Traffic Management System/European Train Control System (ERTMS/ETCS) of level 2. This exclusive traffic control system guarantees the highest technological and safety level, eliminating the possibility of human error and ensuring the control of the train movement at all times.

The FS Group was the first in the world to adopt this system, receiving the Best Paper Award in Montreal in 2006, as an important recognition from the international railway community.
