Engineering for transportation projects

The continuously improving results achieved on the Italian network and the prestigious awards received at international level allow the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group to strengthen its position within Europe and in other international markets.

The Mediterranean, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Latin America, USA, India and Australia are the main areas where Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane is active, exporting Italian excellence to develop railway networks in those countries.

The main services offered in the international market relate to engineering, the management of passenger transport, logistics, infrastructures and stations.

Italferr’s international role

Italferr is the engineering service company of the FS Italiane Group which deals with designing, directing and supervising works, tenders and project management activities for all the large infrastructural investments of the Group, in Italy and in more than 40 countries around the world. Italferr is also strongly committed to the design and construction of eco-friendly works compatible with the needs and expectations expressed by the community.

From 2011 to 2012, Italferr was committed to a project of particular political, strategic and economic significance: entrusted by the Arab Fund, the company studied the railway integration of the 21 countries of the Arab League  (Project "Arab Network Railway Study), covering all the North African countries, the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula. A highly ambitious study both in terms of technical-operative characteristics, due to the vast size of the work, and socio-economic aspects regarding the impact on the population concerned.

The Italferr team, together with the Jordan partner Dar Al Omran, interfaced with the main transport and planning bodies of the 21 countries involved (Ministries of Transport, Planning bodies, supranational coordination bodies, Technical Committees, Industry Organisations, etc.), collecting and classifying investment studies and programmes, transnational agreements, technical and procedural standards currently existing or already planned. The project first defined and then examined in detail a network of about 30,000 kilometres of lines of regional worth (existing or not), of which just 11,350 km (existing or under construction) in sufficient conditions (37% of the entire extension), 15,600 kilometres completely absent and 3,400 kilometres in an insufficient state to run regional traffic.

2012 also saw the conclusion of the project of two maintenance systems for HS trains in Turkey. Italferr was entrusted by Turkish Railways (TCDD) with developing the preliminary and executive project of two systems, one in the Sugar Factory area in Ankara and one in Ispartakule, Istanbul, for the maintenance/repair of the High-speed trains destined to the Turkish HS line being implemented on the Ankara-Istanbul track.
