The Central Library

Founded in 1905 with the birth of the State company, today the Central Library constitutes the main book collection on railway transportation within the FS Italiane Group and one of the primary sources to study Italy’s railway, economic and social history.

The Library boasts an immense bibliographic heritage consisting of volumes, journals and booklets published starting from the middle of the 19th century: a highly articulated bibliographic and documentary collection consisting of technical and operating legislation, professional instructions, statistic reports, descriptive albums about the rolling stock material, railway maps, tariff manuals, budgets, celebratory volumes, memos, minutes of corporate bodies, etc.

At the headquarters it is possible to consult more than 10,000 volumes and about 150 journals.

Only the personnel working at the headquarters may borrow material. Visitors may reproduce the documentation by making a request to the personnel. The photostatic reproduction of historical material or material of special editorial importance is usually not permitted, whereas reproduction is permitted using a personal digital camera.

For bibliographic research it is possible to use the computerised catalogue available online. The reading room hosts some of the most important general consultation works (encyclopaedias, architecture, history and technical manuals, etc.), the main foreign language dictionaries and current legislative codes.
Our rooms were recently enhanced with furniture from railway offices from the beginning of the 1900s. Specialised staff provide a research assistance and consultation service.
