Foundation FS Italian
The Fondazione FS Italiane (Italian FS Foundation) has been established thanks to an initiative by the parent company Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Trenitalia and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, with the aim of developing and preserving the inestimable historical, technical, engineering and industrial heritage of the Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, so that it can be handed down to future generations intact, as a significant, shared reminder of the nation's common progress and sense of belonging.
The three Companies of the Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane intend to donate to the new Foundation about 200 rolling stock from the “historic operative stock”, built in the first half of the 1900s and still in working order, over 50 historical non-operating locomotives that are kept in the Italian National Railway Museum in Pietrarsa as well as the entire library and archives of the Group.
The aim of the Fondazione FS Italiane is not to celebrate the past but to drive the country towards re-discovering the history of its national railways by spreading its culture, promoting the Museo Ferroviario Nazionale in Pietrarsa and organising historical and tourist journeys by train.
Thanks to its highly qualified personnel, the Foundation will also provide the Group with expertise regarding aspects of “industrial archaeology” which no other railway company in Italy is able to display.
The management of the historical archives will also be particularly important. There are thousands of dossiers with maps and photographs concerning designs for bridges, tunnels and railway lines; drawings, plans and photographs of locomotives and historical vehicles; the largest collection in Italy today of photographs and audio-video material - also from the cinema - on the theme of railways. In the year 2000, this collection was already given special recognition by the Italian Ministry of Culture.
